Habitat for Humanity

“creating a community that cares”

habitatforhumanity
All Saints' Kingsway is becoming more involved in this non-profit, non-government, charitable organization dedicated to improving the lives of economically disadvantaged persons through home ownership, and the belief that decent, affordable housing is a basic human need.

Established in 1988, Habitat for Humanity Toronto (HFHT) is the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity.   HFHT works with corporate, faith and individual donors and volunteers to build simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with families in need of adequate shelter.

Every year since 2005 parishioners of All Saints' Kingsway have spent a fulfilling day at one of the HFHT build sites helping to construct a new home for a needy family.

IMG_0505_HabForHumEarly in 2005  the Outreach Committee made contact with Habitat for Humanity. We arranged for a small group of five to participate at a Build Site on a Saturday in October.  The Build Site was in Scarborough, near the Malvern Town Centre, and it is the largest (48 town homes) that Habitat has undertaken in Canada. Depending on the day, the volunteer activities can range from framing, installing vapour barrier, drywalling, painting, hanging doors, installing trim, etc., etc.

Every year since, usually in October, a now much larger group of All Saints' Kingsway parishioners, spends a full day on some HFHT build site to help constructing a new home, in partnership with the new owners.   Anyone over 18 years of age can volunteer -- women can do as much as most men!!  (Age limit is a requiremnt of insurance and Ontario Labour Codes.)

While there is a lot of co-ordination involved in organizing for group build days, individuals can volunteer at any time by calling Faith Relations Co-ordinator for Habitat Toronto, at (416) 755-7353  or see their website at http://www.torontohabitat.on.ca
